A Day in the Life of iRelaunch
Changing the paradigm of returning to work after a career break - it's a task we take seriously every day. You might be wondering what a typical day looks like, the steps we take to make this change happen for you, and the resources involved.
Let's look at July 17, 2018. Four members of the iRelaunch team met in Chicago (did you know we live all over the US?) and started our day at 9:00 a.m. for an invitation-only employer event entitled "Critical Issues in Return to Work Programs." The fifth in this series (but first in Chicago), the event was co-hosted by Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management. Speakers were Carol Fishman Cohen, Chair and Co-founder of iRelaunch; Gisselda Nunez, Executive Director, Head of Experienced Diversity Recruiting Strategy for North America, Morgan Stanley; Sandra Evers-Manly, Vice President, Global Corporate Responsibility, Northrop Grumman; Jamie Krulewitz, Managing Director, Global Head of Talent Programs, Fitch Ratings; and Jessica Galich, Gender Diversity & Take 2 Recruiting Lead, General Motors.
Company program managers and senior executive champions who run career re-entry programs, and those thinking about introducing programs, exchanged ideas and best practices for creating, implementing and expanding career re-entry internship and direct-hiring programs for the high-caliber relauncher talent pool. Over 30 global companies were represented.
Quickly zooming to another downtown Chicago location, team members Carol Fishman Cohen, Mindy Berkower, Suzanne Wall, and Anne Zacharias regrouped for a "lunch and learn" at the MM.LaFleur showroom in Chicago. Open to all relaunchers in the area, guests enjoyed a light lunch while Carol shared her "Top Ten Tips for Returning to Work" and MM.LaFleur stylists presented ways to "take the work out of dressing for work."
Next stop: back to Kellogg where Carol met with Matthew Temple, Director of Alumni Career & Professional Development for the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. There, Matthew interviewed Carol for a career re-entry webinar entitled, "Overcoming the Most Difficult Issues in Career Re-entry." They covered topics including work strategies, dealing with ageism, compensation issues, re-entry internships, career transitioning, and reconnecting professionally after years away. Carol and Matthew also spoke about the steps young professional alumni should take now if anticipating a career break in the future.
Ending the day at O'Hare airport, the iRelaunch team returned to Brookline, MA; Purchase, NY; Maple Plain, MN, and Pittsburgh, PA. Talking to employers about the value of returning career professionals and the benefits of re-entry internship programs, meeting directly with relaunchers to provide return to work advice, and working with your career services offices to build stronger programs for relaunching alumni - it's all in a day's work!
