Relauncher Success Story

Prior to her career break, Melanie received a M.Ed in Counseling Psychology and worked at a number of different Higher Education institutions. During her break, she worked in volunteer positions in her children’s schools and served as a conduit between parents and teachers.

Melanie returned to work part time as the parent communication director at Camp Betsey Cox where she advised and counseled both parents and counselors of the camp, and in 2012 she started a small business as a college admissions consultant. In 2013, Melanie applied for and received the position of Assistant Director for Academic Affairs and Advising at NYU Stern. Seven years later, Melanie is now Associate Director for Academic Affairs and Advising, MS in Accounting.

Prior to my career break I received a M.Ed in Counseling Psychology and worked at a number of different Higher Education institutions -- small and large, public and private, in many connected areas of the co-curricular life of the student: student activities, residence life, student leadership training, orientation and other small and large event planning, health education, Greek advising and academic advising.

I took an extended career break to be home with my family. During this time I worked in many volunteer positions in my children’s schools. I served as a conduit between parents and teachers and helped coordinate events.

In 2008, I returned to work part time as the parent communication director at Camp Betsey Cox where I advised and counseled both parents and counselors of the camp. In the off season I wrote and edited the parent newsletter and managed the Facebook site for camp alumni. In 2012, I started a small business as a college admissions consultant where I guide high school students and their parents through the college search and application process. I developed the business plan and designed a website for the business where I focused mainly on finding the schools that would be the best fit for the student.

During this time I began my search for a position within higher education. I came upon the iRelaunch organization and became involved with the 2013 Return to Work Conference by being a Conference Ambassador. During the Conference, I applied for and received the position of Assistant Director for Academic Affairs and Advising at NYU Stern. The Conference helped to boost my confidence and prepared me for the interviews to come. I returned to work in higher education and could not be happier! After 7 years in the position, in November 2021, I received a promotion to Associate Director for Academic Affairs and Advising, MS in Accounting.
