Compass Pro Bono

Skills based volunteering to serve nonprofits in your region

Use your business skills and experience to make a valuable contribution to a dynamic and deserving nonprofit. Compass places business professionals on consulting teams to provide pro bono strategic guidance to nonprofits in cities across the U.S.

Volunteering on a Compass team will allow you to hone your professional skills and demonstrate your expertise to future employers as you prepare to return to the workplace. Moreover, with thousands of current and former volunteers working across sectors in multiple regions, joining the Compass community provides an excellent opportunity for professional networking.

Our Programs

  • Strategic Consulting Projects: Business professionals are placed on volunteer teams to help a local nonprofit tackle strategic challenges. Among other themes, projects center on board development, funding strategy, partnerships, strategic alignment, strategic marketing, and technology strategy. Classic Projects (teams of 8-10) take place between September and May; Micro Projects (teams of 5-6) take place between February and June. Learn more and apply here.
  • On Demand Program: Business professionals are matched one-on-one with nonprofit clients to address acute needs. These bespoke, deep dive engagements last up to eight weeks. Learn more and apply here.
  • On Board Program: Business professionals are matched with nonprofits seeking board members. Compass supports prospective board members in finding a board that is a good fit for their skills and interests while helping them understand their role. “I've worked with hundreds of clients on consulting projects over the last 11 years in the industry and can say I've never left a project as fulfilled personally as I am leaving this year’s Compass project. It's fantastic to be able to use my career experience to make a difference in the community that means so much to me.”

“The work of the Compass team, all volunteers, was truly remarkable. No team of consultants could have invested so much time, passion, and commitment to our institution with such authenticity and care. The work was deliberate, focused, thoughtful, and exceeded all of our expectations—as every aspect of it displayed a complete understanding of how we are and what we stand for. The end result is a strategic plan which will be our roadmap for many years to come. We could not be more grateful.”
