Did you realize that internships are not only for recent college graduates?

Progressive companies offer paid internships to attract top-caliber professionals after a career break. 

Programs range in length from weeks to months and in compensation from stipends to salaries.


The L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program recognizes the achievements and contributions of exceptional females across the globe, by awarding promising scientists with Fellowships to help further their research. Relaunchers are welcome to apply.

Two fellowships each year to mathematicians who need support when their career is interrupted by family responsibilities, relocation of partner, or other similar circumstance, making possible some continuous mathematical activity, so enabling the fellow to be in a position to apply for posts when circumstances allow.



22-week reentry internship program for returning technology and engineering professionals. Inaugural cohort began October 2015. 


11 week paid programme began in April 2016 for individuals who have taken a voluntary career break of at least 2 years.


Internships in coding, user experience design, graphic design, documentation, web development, marketing, translation and other types of tasks needed to sustain a FOSS project. Relaunchers welcome to apply.

Paid project-based internship, up to 6 months long with flexible scheduling, either onsite in Korea, Japan, Australia, India. Minimum of 3 years work experience before career break of 2 to 8 years.

Returner Fellowships are for those seeking to resume a research career, following a period of absence from active research of at least one year. Applications due September of each year.

iRelaunch originated and co-leads the STEM Reentry Task Force with the Society of Women Engineers, in which 7 global engineering companies are piloting paid reentry internship programs in 2016 for returning engineers and technical professionals. The companies include IBM, General Motors, Intel, Booz Allen Hamilton, Cummins, Caterpillar, and Johnson Controls. Men and women eligible to apply.


6- to 9-month reentrty internship program for returning technical professionals. Rolling admissions..  

The University has established the Back to Science Fellowships to provide a one-year opportunity for both women and men in STEM subject areas, who have taken extended career breaks (>5 years), to join an established research group. Each Fellowship consists of a £16,000 bursary, with a further £5,000 available for consumable costs. Two scholarships are available each academic year until 2017.

Six-month paid placements, with possibility of turning into permanent role at end of placement. Also career support - on the job training, CV clinics.

2- to 4-year part-time or full-time fellowship for returning research scientists in the European Economic Area who will be doing research in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Must have career break of at least two years and must have had at least two years of post-doctoral scientific research experience before the career break. Applicants must secure a research sponsor and sponsoring laboratory.
