National Military Spouse Network

Helping military families find career opportunities

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day and the official launch day of the brand new National Military Spouse Network (NMSN). The NMSN is a professional development and networking organization for military spouses, with a focus on helping them "balance a viable career with the military lifestyle." Career continuity is a huge issue for military spouses. Frequent moves and unpredictable deployment schedules leave the primary family management, childcare and eldercare duties to the spouse left at home, making the career break an inevitable reality for many. The NMSN provides a community for military spouse professionals, businesses, academics and media to share expertise and advice about realistic career development, given the constraints that military life entails.*

The NMSN is the brainchild of Sue Hoppin, military spouse, co-author of the Dummies Series "A Family's Guide to the Military," and an expert on military spouse issues. Sue was the Military Officers Association of America's first Deputy Director for Spouse Outreach charged with spearheading military spouse initiatives for the 370,000 member association. She is the perfect person to establish a national military spouse network as her network in the military spouse community ranges from the top officers focused on spouse issues in all five services branches, to spouses themselves.

Sue understands firsthand the career challenges faced by military spouses because she's lived it herself. She met her husband when they were attending school and finished her studies while he attended undergraduate pilot training. Their transient lifestyle, deployment schedules and other demands kept Sue at home with their son while her husband deployed around the world. It wasn’t until five years ago that Sue was finally able to launch her own career. Before then, she served the military community as a volunteer. She is the immediate past president of the Air Force Officers Wives Club of the Greater Washington D.C. area.

Do you know a military spouse?  Reach out to her or him today and let her know about the National Military Spouse Network.
